At Sunlit Impressions we sell quality handwoven tapestries, huipiles, belts, tablecloths, wall hangings and other Native American artwork, along with photography. It is important to us not to sell overly commercialized products made specifically for Western markets. We are not selling commodities rather we sell fine art produced by Mayan artisans. We also sell photography of the artists, their families and people in the communities where we work.
It is our philosophy that Mayan artists should be given the opportunity to create work that is logically harmonious with their cultures. Thus we do not dictate to our weavers what should be produced nor do we encourage them to make cheap products for commercial sale. We value Mayan culture as is, as the Mayans themselves define it. We hope to offer an outlet for Mayan people to sustain themselves within the constructs of their culture as much as possible with the least amount of interference. Though the use of photography might seem to contradict this, it is our feeling that it interferes with local traditions less being as it does not force Mayan people to change their lifestyles by working in factories etc. Our aim is to help Mayans maintain themselves while allowing them to grow and change (or not change) as they see fit. We hope to serve them rather than use them to fulfill our capitalistic wishes.
It is important to us that our customers know where the products they purchase are coming from. We want to put a face to the articles we sell. Our philosophy is simple; Mayan artwork is produced by thinking, feeling, individuals who should be treated accordingly on the western market. They deserve both recognition and a living wage. In accordance with this Philosophy we also try to include information about the individual artisans or subjects of photography with all of the products we sell. We want our customers to know about the people who they are helping to support.
